Un „anabolic natural” găsit în spanac a primit recent o aprobare a eficacităţii finanţată de WADA şi o recomandare de interzicare. Într-un studiu de 10 săptămâni pe 46 de tineri, suplimentarea cu ecdisteron a fost asociată cu creşeri semnificative ale masei musculare şi ale forţei la împins din culcat, fără creşterea marcatorilor de toxicitate hepatică sau renală. Mecanismul propus implică legarea la receptorii estrogenici, nu la cei androgeni. Oricine caută turkesteron trebuie să înţeleagă ce dovedeşte şi ce nu dovedeşte acest studiu mic şi relativ izolat, şi de ce sportivii testaţi trebuie să fie prudenţi.
